- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2016I loved this book and the characters were well developed and the touch of humor was well placed.
At first I did not like Laney because she was weak and a coward, however as the story unfolded I could understand her lack of self worth. Connor is a dream come true for all women. His love for Laney had no limits. The love making was off the charts and graphs which caused me to have very vivid dreams. This book also had a little magic and lots of laughs. If you want to read an awesome and outstanding love story then select this book. Overall a great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2016This was a second chance romance. Laney had a traumatic childhood due to her addicted, emotionally abusive mother with a partner who was physically abusive (to the mother). She ran away to live with her grandmother after learning of the grandmother's existence and never saw/heard from her mother. Connor lived next door. They fell in love as teens, but Laney, due to her low self-esteem, rejected him and his love. They both left their small town and went away to school. When she returns to escape a relationship with a nice man she doesn't love after discovering he was planning to propose (she found the ring), she finds out Connor is also back in town, has bought his parents' house, and is living next door. From there, the story is about them gradually finding their way back to each other and Laney learning to value herself and coming to grips with her past so she can move forward with her life and find her way back to Connor. He was a great hero. Sometimes I wanted to shake her, though I understood her issues.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2020This has been a fun book to read. I really like the main characters, including the pets. I think the adult sections are well written and enjoyable. The supporting characters are good. The writing is smooth and fluid with some good humor interjected.
I’m a bit disappointed in the proofreading which missed several errors including failure to repeatedly use adverbs where appropriate allowing adjectives to stand instead. Not uncommon in the romance novels I’ve read in the past year.
I’ve awarded the book a 5-star rating because I like it. It’s been a good read for me. I like books ending with an HEA! They’re good escapism for me!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2020Seriously. Tilt and ear and crane your neck or at least get ready for every character to do this multiple times throughout the story. It’s so bad that I began imagining the not always likable characters as little dogs tilting their ears to a weird noise. Were the characters being sassy or is the entire character list hard of hearing and thinking pointing their open ears in the direction of the speaker helps them hear? Who knows, certainly not me and I think I may have to be done with this series for a while. The first 3 books all have excessive ear tilting and neck craning.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2016I loved this book. It was a true romance story. I am so glad Laney learned how to love herself so that she could receive love from someone else. I also like that Connor loved her so much that he was willing to be patient and give her a chance. The ending was awesome and I look forward to reading more about their happiness. Great job Hazel!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2017Laney is an abused girl who runs away to live with her grandma. Connor is the boy next door who becomes her best friend and helps her though school. This a serious story, yet has some humor. Connor, her friend, works to help Laney to grow up and be an adult. Laney had ran away thinking she is not good for Connor. Later on, she runs away from her new boyfriend, and returns back to her grandma's house and the sleepy town she left years ago. Connor is now a vet, but still living in his old home. The characters fit together in the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2016Laney has a lot of trust issues that make not able to decide what she wants out life. Conner on the hand know what he wants out of life all he will have do is make a scared and confused laney see what is right in front of her soul mate that would go through ice and fire just to make her see what she has right in front of her. This is a great read if you love romance story's .
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2016The banter between all of the characters totally makes this book. This is a second chance romance. High school sweethearts are once again next door neighbors. Laney turned down Connor's marriage proposal before college because she didn't think she was worthy of him. She's made a lot of bad decisions, but goes home to her grandmother to figure herself out.
This was an awesome book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome read from Hazel Kelly
Laney was robbed of her childhood. She never knew who her father was, her mother was an addict and so was her abusive boyfriend. She has scars to prove a miserable existence in her youth. Discovering she had a grandmother, Laney begs her mother to run away with her to escape but she refuses. Laney grows up feeling worthless and undeserving of love. She meets her next day neighbor, Connor in school. They became fast friends and in their teenage years became lovers and soulmates. When they were seventeen, Connor proposes to her but she turns him down and terminates their relationship. Laney never loved herself and felt that she had to let go because she held him back. Needless to say, Laney gutted Connor. Fastforward to adulthood and Laney, who majored in art, waited on tables. She never got to use her degree in art and her life was just not moving forward even with a perfect boyfriend. She escaped to her grandma Helly's and broke up with him. Connor was Helly's neighbor and was now a vet with a pending patent for an artificial limb for dogs. He was starting a successful career while Laney was going nowhere. They still both felt their attraction and affection for one another. Feelings resurface along with good and bad memories. Laney is confronted with her past feelings and regrets. Will she do another runner?
There were countless beautiful words in this book. I swoon when I read them. A few of my favorites were: Regret is pain relived. Not pain relieved. And, Forgiveness isn't like a parking ticket. You don't earn it just for showing up at the wrong place. There's also "But I'd rather die tomorrow knowing you were mine than live one more day hoping you know know much you mean to me." I cried a little towards the ending where forgiveness finally happens. This book is a fun read, the conversations where fast-paced and clever. Michelle Williams' character, Jen from Dawson's Creek comes to mind when Laney speaks. I love that Laney and Connor took up where they left, as if they have never been apart as they converse comfortably with each other. I appreciate their honesty towards each other. They seemed always in sync. Helly for a granny, has a smart mouth who still makes Laney blush. I love her character, so new age.
This is a standalone book with an HEA. It has all the ingredients in it: humour, a little angst, bitterness, great love, regrets and forgiveness. There are few lapses in proofreading but do not let it get to you. This is a beautiful book. Highly recommended weekend read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sexy, funny, not overly angsty
I picked this up after reading the first book in this series, and I enjoyed it just as much!
It was humorous with great dialogue between the characters. Definitely one of this author’s strengths.
“As much as he’d tried to put me back together, I was always going to have physical and emotional scars that would keep me from being the perfect girl he deserved.”
Laney and Connor were teenage sweethearts, until Laney broke Connor’s heart. They haven’t seen one another in years. When Laney escapes her current personal situation and runs to her grandma’s house, she doesn’t realise that Connor is also living next door, again.
“A few seconds was all it took for her to change my life the first time I saw her, too and I could almost feel it happening again”
All those old feelings return – well, they actually never went away. Connor wants his chance with her again, but Laney needs to love herself, and put her childhood past behind her, before she can truly be happy.
It was a fab read – sexy, funny, not overly angsty. Really like this author’s writing style!

4.0 out of 5 stars Boy oh boy!
A nice second chance story. Connor hasn't gotten over his breakup with Laney after all these years. She returns home, again have run from commitment. This is all due to her childhood so you can understand the whys. Connor was very understanding & indulgent of her behaviour. Her gran Helly was a good fit in the tale. We all love HEAs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love story
I liked the story. I appreciate that Laney really put in the work on herself and I liked Helly. Connor bothered me though with how upset he got at Dave when Dave was just looking out for his friend. Connor was a little to forgiving and it was odd that he wasn't a little more formal with Laney at first. It was a good story though
